IELTS

What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English proficiency test, trusted by over 12,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, immigration authorities, and professional bodies. It is designed to measure a person’s ability to communicate effectively in English across listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

There are two main test formats, and the one you choose depends on your purpose:

  1. IELTS Academic

    • Suitable for students who want to pursue higher education (undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional registration) in an English-speaking country.
    • Focuses on academic language and assesses readiness for a study environment.

2. IELTS General Training

    • Suitable for those migrating to English-speaking countries (e.g., UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada) for work or training programs.

    • Focuses on practical, everyday English for social and workplace situations.

  1. Listening (30 minutes)

    • 4 sections, 40 questions.

    • Includes conversations and monologues in different accents.

    • Tests your ability to understand main ideas, details, and opinions.

  2. Reading (60 minutes)

    • 40 questions.

    • Academic: 3 long passages from journals, magazines, or books.

    • General Training: Extracts from notices, advertisements, newspapers, and work-related documents.

  3. Writing (60 minutes)

    • Task 1 (Academic): Describe graphs, charts, tables, or processes.

    • Task 1 (General): Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal).

    • Task 2: Essay writing (both Academic and General).

  4. Speaking (11–14 minutes)

    • Face-to-face interview with an examiner.

    • 3 parts: introduction & questions, individual talk, and discussion.

    • Assesses fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

IELTS is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9.

  • You receive a band score for each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and an overall band score (average of all 4).

  • Band descriptors:

    • 9 = Expert user

    • 8 = Very good user

    • 7 = Good user

    • 6 = Competent user

    • 5 = Modest user

    • 4 = Limited user

Most universities require an overall band score between 6.0 – 7.5 depending on the course.
